10th Annual: Windsor 6th Man Golf Classic

Wizards,

Overview:  This year the program will be celebrating our 10th year of our annual golf fundraiser.  Last year was one of our most successful years as we raised over $10,000 for the program.  Last year was successful, but it does not mean this year is guaranteed to be the same. Therefore, we must all plan and prepare for the event.

The Golf Fundraising Committee has met twice over the last month to discussed how we want to organize and facilitate this years golf fundraiser.  Already we have many new ideas to make for a successful fundraiser as well as an event that is enjoyable for all who participate.

Registration flyer:  The event is scheduled for August 24th at 1:00 PM at Pelican Lakes Golf Course in Windsor.

Funds in the past have been used to purchase a Gun by shoot a way, team uniforms for all levels, team practice gear for all levels, team warm ups for all levels, travel gear for all levels, a white board for road trips, a stats program, hudl to upload film and scout, ipads to film games and record stats, books for our book studies, training equipment like new basketballs, heavy balls, dribbling goggles, lateral resistance bands, reaction balls, cones, a vertical jump machine, team meals, snacks, and gatorade.

How each family can contribute:  All families in the Windsor High School boys basketball program are encouraged to activity engage and participate in a fundraiser that benefits all it’s members.  We would like each returning player who played basketball last year as well as all incoming freshman to help make the event successful by:

  1. Getting a foursome to sign up for the event.

  2. Getting a business to sponsor a hole.

  3. Donating a item(s) for the auction.

  4. Participating in a blitz day in June.

Parents, do not do the work for your son.  Encourage them to seek out friends, family members, and neighbors on their own.  This event is not solely for friends and families of the program and can be for anybody who plays golf or wants to participate in a community event.

On the day of the event, players are expected to help assist in the event by selling 50/50 raffle tickets, helping facilitate games,  handing out water to golfers, and assist in any way they can.

Communication:  Please communicate with me regarding what your family will be contributing to the fundraiser as you begin to get commitments from community members and send the registration form to me at the high school.

Players as auction item:  This year we will  auctioning off 10 players to the highest bidder to work for them for a set period of time.  Maybe you will be out of town for a week and will need your lawn mowed. Maybe you own your own business and need your  company car detailed. Please let me know if you would like your son to participate. All we would need is a picture of your son and a profile of their qualities and skills.  This is not replacing traditional donating items, but we are hoping this will increase participation. This is a great opportunity to help with the event if you are not able to help in other ways.

Blitz:  To better market our event to our community, we will be asking players to participate in a blitz on specific days throughout the month of June.  We will be asking players to go to Pelican Lakes Golf Course on the evenings of both the men’s and women’s league to assist the golfers in carrying their clubs to their golf carts and asking them to consider participating in our event.  Flyers will be distributed. Players should wear Windsor gear and be helpful and respectful to all golfers as they are representing our program, school, and community. See the date, location, time, and grade that will be participating in the blitz below:

Weld County Food Bank's Turkey Drive

Wizards,

This Saturday’s schedule (11/17/18) is unique due to the fact that our program is participating in the Weld County Food Bank’s annual Holiday Turkey Drive.  Players will be assigned a shift in which they will be asking customers entering King Soopers in Windsor if they would be willing to donate food or money to the food bank.  Other players will be collecting and weighing the food donated. This is a great opportunity to support those in need over the holidays. This is also a great experience for our players to initiate conversations with strangers and to learn that to lead is to serve.

Tryout/Mini Camp Information

Wizards,

This years boys basketball tryouts will be held November 12th-14th.  JV/Varsity tryouts will be held after school from 3:30-5:30 and our freshman and sophomore tryouts will be from 5:30-7:30.  Winter sports registration must be complete through our athletic department in order to tryout. Coaches will not allow a player to participate in tryouts unless a yellow registration card has been handed to their coach.

Prior to our our official tryout dates we will be holding a mini camp the week of November 5th-9th.  JV/Varsity mini camps will be from 3:30-5:30 in the Aux gym and our Freshman and Sophomores will practice from 7:30-9:00 in the Aux gym.  Mini camp is a great opportunity for players to show the coaches what a player might bring to the team, learn about our offensive/defensive philosophies, and improve conditioning prior to our 3 day tryout.  Mini Camp is not mandatory but as a staff we strongly suggested players interested in playing basketball at WHS attend. You never want to miss an opportunity to impress the coaching staff.

The Windsor High Schools boys basketball program traditionally has a high volume of players tryout each year.  We had 55 player participate in our summer program and as a staff we are expecting to see 60+ players tryout.  Our JV and Varsity teams combined will keep 16-18 players and our Freshman/Sophomore teams will keep 20-22 players combined.  That means the program will keep 36-40 players each season.  Unfortunately, this means if you are a Junior and Senior and are not in the top 16-18, you would not be offered a position in the program due to not being eligible to play on the sophomore and freshman teams.  Similarly, if you are Sophomore or Freshmen and are not in the top 20-22 you would also not be offered the opportunity to play due to not being eligible to play on the Freshman team and there is not a 5th basketball team at WHS.  Unlike other sports programs at the high school, this means there will be cuts and a lot of them. This is the worst part about coaching but is a necessary evil.  The harsh truth about having four team is that we can only house so many student athletes at each level while still providing meaningful instruction and competition.  Keeping too many participants on the roster spreads practice reps and game minutes too thinly among the athletes, hindering their growth and the programs competitiveness.  Competition for making the team will be extremely high and even more so for playing time.

The coaching staff at WHS looks at a variety of attributes in making decisions about who does and who does not make the team.  We first look at their character, do they fit the culture of the program? Do they work harder for longer than other players. Have they improved this offseason?  How do they handled adversity? Are they are great teammate? We also look at conditioning, strength, athletic ability. Did they show up to tryouts in shape? Are they strong enough and quick enough to defensively guard other players at their position?  Obviously, we also take into consideration their basketball skill set, knowledge of our system, and willingness to fill a specific role the team needs.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  We are looking forward to the upcoming basketball season!
